ARKON Anesthesia Delivery System honored as 2014 Medical Design Excellence Award winner

Design Concepts announced today that the ARKON anesthesia delivery system has been selected as the Silver Winner in the Critical-Care and Emergency Medicine Products category of the 2014 Medical Design Excellence Awards competition. The 2014 MDEA winning products were announced in New York on June 11th during the 17th Annual MDEA Ceremony held in conjunction with MD&M East, the largest MedTech event on the East Coast.

ARKON™ emphasizes two areas of the device: the “clinic” and the “office.” The clinic area expands outward to accommodate a variety of workflows while providing a wide-angle view that keeps anesthesiologists facing their patients. Features like a rotating breathing circuit allow more flexibility that helps optimize anesthesia delivery. Recognizing that anesthesiologists seldom have dedicated workspace, ARKON’s office introduces storage for equipment and paperwork, multiple height work surfaces and drop-down shelves. Design Concepts designed ARKON for Spacelabs Healthcare, a global medical device manufacturer with research and development offices located in Madison, WI

The MDEA is the medtech industry’s premier design competition committed to searching worldwide for the highest caliber finished medical devices, products, systems, or packaging available on the market. The awards program celebrates the achievements of the medical device manufacturers, their suppliers, and the many people behind the scenes—engineers, scientists, designers, and clinicians—who are responsible for the cutting-edge products that are saving lives; improving patient healthcare; and transforming medtech—one innovation at a time.

“Being recognized as an MDEA Winner is the icing on the cake of what has been an amazing experience for our research, design and engineering team,” said Dave Franchino, President of Design Concepts. “We were honored to collaborate with Spacelabs Healthcare to design a system that truly addresses the needs of anesthesiologists and patients.”

Entries are judged by an impartial panel of practicing doctors, nurses, and technicians alongside industrial designers, engineers, manufacturers, and human factors experts. The MDEA Juror Panel selected 33 winning products from among 54 finalist products in 11 categories.

“Spacelabs is dedicated to improving the overall healthcare experience for our clinicians and patients. ARKON is a perfect example of our teams working to offer solutions that help eliminate everyday challenges, as a result of strong clinical partnerships and feedback,” said Nicholas Ong, President of Spacelabs. “Partnering with Design Concepts helped us bring life to ARKON’s design and envision capabilities that no other company has brought to the world of anesthesia delivery. MDEA recognizes product design based upon usability and user needs. ARKON has a great aesthetic, but this award acknowledges the focus we maintained on the customer who relies on this product day-in and day-out.”
