Design Concepts is pleased to announce that the redesigned EXOGEN Ultrasound Bone Healing System, developed in collaboration with Bioventus, was awarded the Stanley H. Caplan User-Centered Product Design Award. The award was presented to representatives of Design Concepts and Bioventus at a ceremony held during the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society’s (HFES) International Annual Meeting in Chicago on Tuesday, Oct. 28.

Design Concepts worked with Bioventus, a global leader in orthobiologics headquartered in Durham, N.C., to research and design the next generation of its EXOGEN system. EXOGEN is the only FDA-approved bone healing device that uses ultrasound to stimulate the body’s natural healing process.

“The EXOGEN system redesign was a multidisciplinary team effort that truly focused on needs of all stakeholders,” said Craig Conner, director of human factors and principal of Design Concepts. “We interviewed fracture patients, prescribing physicians and chief medical officers of insurance companies. We visited homes and clinics to observe use and discover unmet needs. Based on these research insights, we were able to enhance EXOGEN’s ease of use and improve the overall use experience by incorporating a calendar that tracks patient compliance. This calendar function motivates the patient to perform the daily therapy, and helps reinforce the relationship between compliance and healing outcomes for prescribing physicians and insurance companies.”
