A wet floor is a dangerous floor. In high-traffic public restrooms, it’s also a common problem. Sinks are typically a few feet away from paper towels dispensers or hand dryers and wet hands drip water on the floor. Accidents are surprisingly frequent. Approximately 25,000 people are victims of slip and fall accidents every day, costing businesses an estimated $84 million a day, according to the National Safety Council.
Bradley, an industry leader in commercial hand washing equipment, saw an opportunity to help its customers improve safety and save money. Why not incorporate a touchless soap dispenser, faucet and hand dryer right into the sink? A great idea, but not as easy as it sounds. In particular, the hand dryer in the first version of the unit blew water onto the user. So Bradley asked Delve to conceptualize, design and engineer a second generation system that kept both the user and the floor dry.
Our engineers and industrial designers used Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to evaluate design parameters, looking for an approach to maximize the dryer’s air flow while minimizing water blowing back onto the user. The team used aprons they made out of Aquadoodle mats (a children’s fabric toy that changes color when wet) to evaluate splash-back in testing with real prototypes.
